About Formulas

Devine Formula: Established by Dr. Ben J. Devine in 1974 to adjust drug dosing based on ideal body weight. It sets a baseline weight of 50 kg for males and 45.5 kg for females at 5 ft, then adds 2.3 kg per additional inch of height.

Hamwi Formula: Developed by Dr. William Hamwi in 1964 for nutritional assessment. It recommends 48 kg for men and 45.5 kg for women at 5 ft, with a 2.7 kg (men) or 2.2 kg (women) increment per inch beyond.

Robinson Formula: Introduced in 1983 by Robinson et al. as a refinement to Devine, offering slightly lower target weights (52 + 1.9 kg/in for men; 49 + 1.7 kg/in for women) that account for modern body composition trends.

Miller Formula: Proposed by Dr. Ross Miller in 1983, tailored for athletic populations. It starts at higher base values (56.2 kg for men; 53.1 kg for women) and uses smaller increments (1.41/1.36 kg per inch) to reflect greater muscle mass.
